Asian Games 2023: India’s brilliant performance, won 5 medals in shooting and sailing

Asian Games 2023: India is participating with 655 athletes in the Asian Games 2023, which continues from September 23 in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. The 19th edition of the continental multisport event officially began with the opening ceremony and will conclude on 8 October. This tournament, which takes place every four years, was to be held in the year 2022, but due to COVID-19, it was postponed by a year.

India had sent a contingent of 570 athletes to the previous edition of the Asian Games, Jakarta 2018, where the Indian team had won the highest number of 70 medals in the Asian Games, which included 16 gold, 23 silver and 31 bronze medals. With a larger contingent at Hangzhou 2023, India’s medal tally is also expected to increase.

Over the years, athletics has won the majority of medals for India at the Asian Games, with 254 out of a total of 672 medals. All eyes will once again be on the track and field event, in which India has sent a large contingent of 68 athletes.

The Indian athletics team at Hangzhou 2023 includes men’s javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the reigning World, Olympic and Asian Games champion. Also included are top names like Commonwealth Games men’s 3000m steeplechase silver medalist Avinash Sable and women’s hurdles sensation Jyoti Yaraji.

Let us tell you that for the first time, India has also sent cricket teams to the Asian Games, in which both men and women teams are participating. Indian teams are participating in football and hockey. The boxing team led by world champion Nikhat Zareen and Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and the wrestling team led by Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Ultimate Panghal are also strong medal contenders. People will also have high expectations from the shooting team comprising Manu Bhaker and Rudranksh Patil.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and badminton star PV Sindhu, both Olympic medalists, will be in action at the Asian Games and archery world champions Aditi Gopichand Swamy and Ojas Praveen Deotale will also be seen competing.

Apart from medals, this Asian Games 2023 will also provide 74 quotas for Paris 2024 Olympics. Which includes 6 quotas in Archery, 10 in Artistic Swimming, 34 in Boxing, 2 in Breaking, 2 in Hockey, 10 in Modern Pentathlon, 6 in Sailing, 2 in Tennis and 2 in Water Polo.
